"I will build my church, and the gates of hell will not conquer it."
As a church we consider ourselves a "movement of God's Spirit in people" rather than an institution. We identify with the greater "Church as we see her spread out through all time and space and rooted in eternity, terrible as an army with banners." (C.S. Lewis)
The movement of Redeemer has roots in a local Baptist Church. In the 1970s its Senior Pastor Joe Atkinson and many others in the church began walking in the gifts and power of the Holy Spirit. This was unconventional in a Baptist context and was quite controversial.
After several years and much corporate prayer and fasting, God spoke to those who desired to learn more about being led by the Holy Spirit in a new way. They were to leave the conventional church setting behind and gather for worship in various temporary locations--ranging from an elementary school to the local Mother House.
Those who moved out gathered as Redeemer Baptist Church for 11 years without a building to call their own, until God told them it was time to build. Now we have a beautiful building that supports the movement of God's Spirit in this people – though the building cannot contain it. Today, we call this movement Redeemer Fellowship Church.
The Virtuous Woman
A metaphor for Christ's church,
by Maureen O'keefe-Strang
In the kingdom of God Jesus is the King. His example shows us that leadership is not merely a matter of hierarchy, but of service and responsibility. The greatest among us serve. Those who have been faithful with small tasks are given greater responsibility.
Elders are chosen by the existing body of elders, with the approval of the body. It is a lifelong volunteer appointment. Several of the current elders have been serving since the founding of Redeemer church over 40 years ago. Their foremost task is to corporately discern the will of God in the matters of this church. These matters include, but are not limited to, hiring/firing of staff, investments, developments, doctrine, and church discipline.
Our elders are lead by God's Spirit to shepherd the body in unity, working to maintain an environment that nurtures maturity and invites inspiration and vision from the people of God for their various services to Christ:
